stamen design | Facebook: mapping how viral photos spread

Following up on last month’s map of the world’s friendships on Facebook, we’ve released another visualization of relationships across social networks today. Called “Photo-sharing Explosions,” these visualizations look at the different ways that photos shared on George Takei’s Facebook page go viral once he’s posted them.

Each visualization is made up of a series of branches, starting from George. As each branch grows, re-shares split off onto their own arcs. Sometimes, these re-shares spawn a new generation of re-shares, and sometimes they explode in short-lived bursts of activity. The two different colors show gender, and each successive generation becomes lighter as time goes by. And the curves are just for snazz.

The visualizations are live at facebookstories.com.

Lostalgic

This project is based on the entire ABC’s LOST TV show scripts, 115 episodes in 7 seasons, that I managed to parse from Lostpedia. I also parsed this page with additional information about hidden characters relations.

My aim for this project is not (only) to visualize some properties and patterns out of the script but actually to allow to read and enjoy the series in a different way.

His And Hers Colors – Popular Color Names By Gender Preference

PICTURE A HAPPY COUPLE – let’s call them Dick and Jane – out furniture shopping. They happen upon a comfy couch with pink upholstery, and Jane wants to buy it. Whether that puppy glides out the front door, or lingers on the showroom floor, could depend upon the words she uses to describe it. For maximum male appeal, should Jane call her sofa “light red?” “Husky salmon?” “Dusty nude?” Or would a simple “pink” suffice? The future of the living room hangs in the balance!

Right now, Jane needs a gender-color thesaurus… but in lieu of such exoticness, she might sample the cushy charms of the latest model in our fine line of well-built data visualizations, entitled His And Hers Colors.

Infographic: 160 Years Of Hurricanes Form One Giant Hurricane! | Co.Design: business innovation design

We follow our tropical storms like big game hunters on safari, watching as these monsters wake and go on a rampage, close enough to document every single detail, but far enough, hopefully, to never get caught in their path.

FatFonts Player

What are FatFonts? visit their page to get all the information and download the fonts in different formats

I love FatFonts because they are the ‘missing link’ between writing and information visualization, as suggested in this post

(trick: clear the equation text-area to display a list of sample functions)

Arms Trade

The mapping arms data (MAD) visualization of small arms, light weapons and ammunition transfers was produced by Google as part of the Google Ideas INFO (Illicit Networks, Forces in Opposition) Summit with support from the Igarape Institute and data provided by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) small arms database. The PRIO database contains more than 1 mllion records of exports and imports of small arms, light weapons and ammunition across 250 states and territories between 1992 and 2010. The full MAD tool is available at http://workshop.chromeexperiments.com/projects/armsglobe/

emoto

The emoto project captures and visualises the excitement around the Olympic Games in London 2012.  We track twitter for themes related to the Games, analyse the messages for content and emotional expressions, and visualise topics and tone of the conversation.

Find out which topics are most discussed, or see all current messages related to the Games. And don’t forget to read more about the background of the project on theemoto blog.
