Arms Trade

The mapping arms data (MAD) visualization of small arms, light weapons and ammunition transfers was produced by Google as part of the Google Ideas INFO (Illicit Networks, Forces in Opposition) Summit with support from the Igarape Institute and data provided by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) small arms database. The PRIO database contains more than 1 mllion records of exports and imports of small arms, light weapons and ammunition across 250 states and territories between 1992 and 2010. The full MAD tool is available at http://workshop.chromeexperiments.com/projects/armsglobe/

Ascii Street View

Real-time Ascii Art conversion of Google Street View panorama’s done in WebGL.

You’ll need Chrome, Firefox 8+, or another browser that supports CORS WebGL textures.

Coded by @peter_nitsch. Inspired by Sol’s TextFXlibrary. Built with @thespite’s Google Street View Panorama library, and three.js.

Read about this at Teehan+Lax Labs.

Google – The first Google image for every word in the dictionary

If a picture says more than a thousand words – and current internet dynamics tend to agree – what would a visual guide to the English vocabulary, contemporary and ‘webresentative’, look like? Ben West and Felix Heyes, two artists and designers from London (UK), found out when they replaced the 21,000 words found in your everyday dictionary with whatever shows up first for each word in Google’s image search. Behold Google – a 1240 page behemoth of JPGs, GIFs and PNGs in alphabetical order.

Multiplayer music making with Plink! | CreativeJS

Plink is a very original idea. It’s an online, collaborative, multiplayer music making toy made byDinahmoe. It uses Node.js and WebSockets to create an multi-user “chatroom” but instead of entering text to have a chat, the interface generates music!

Pulsating circles are generated by moving the mouse over a <canvas> element. Clicking and holding the mouse generates a musical tone. The colour of the circle determines the type of audio you play such as high or low notes, and is created using Google’s Web Audio JavaScript API. What a great combo of web technologies, and great fun too!
